According to a report issued by the market research firm Gartner, worldwide PDA shipments were up 21% during the third quarter of 2005. With the growing number of available devices that can store data, Gartner has defined the category PDA as follows;

"A data-centric handheld computer under one pound designed for use with both hands. These devices use an open market operating system for which third-party applications are available."

They also notethat Microsoft is the leading vendor of operating systems for PDA's, with a market share of 49.2%. Click the link below to read the full report.

Pocketmind Software has announced an update to thier PocketMusic mp3 player for the Pocket PC. This is a fairly minor update with some minor bug fixes, as well as the addition of an advanced playlist organizer.

You can continue with the option to chose the freeware basic PocketMusic player, or upgrade to the PocketMusic bundle which adds WMA & OGG support, iTunes playback on Pocket PC, HTTP streaming, as well as audible files support.

Microsoft has announced thier quarterly financial results, which included a strong showing from the Mobile and Embedded devices division.

"Mobile and Embedded Devices revenue was up more than 50% due to continued adoption of Windows Mobile software. Major product announcements from both Motorola Inc. and Palm Inc. highlighted the continued customer momentum of Windows Mobile 5.0."

Hp Canada and Rogers have announced that they will be offering the Ipaq hw6515 Mobile Messenger on the Rogers Wireless GSM/GPRS/EDGE network here in Canada.

"Offering Mobile Messenger's wireless voice, high-speed EDGE data networking, GPS technology, and a built-in keyboard, the hw6515 operates exclusively in Canada on the Rogers Wireless GSM/GPRS/EDGE network. HP adds that the quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) devices offer global roaming capabilities in many countries around the world. "

Fujitsu Siemens has announced the arrival of thier Pocket LOOX N500 and Pocket LOOX N520 handhelds. Both devices feature Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 Premium Edition and NAVIGON MobileNavigator 5 as an option.

Wahl Instruments has announced a line of imaging camera's for the Pocket PC. Of particular interest is the Heat Spy Imager Series, which can be used to pinpoint hot spots and indicate surface temperatures

"The Heat Spy Imager and Pocket PC communicate with each other through an asynchronous serial port. Images saved on the Pocket PC are date and time stamped. Descriptive labels and voice notations also can be associated with the images. Camera settings such as sensitivity and temperature range are controlled through the Pocket PC, along with image properties such as color palette and temperature scale"

The HSI devices are compatible with "most" Pocket PCs running Windows Mobile for Pocket PC 2000, 2002, or 2003, and will retail starting at $3,499.

Microsoft has posted a page on thier web site that deals with some potential known issues with Activesync 4.0.

"In some specific cases, Windows Mobile device connectivity to a Windows PC running Microsoft ActiveSync 4.0 may experience connection problems. This document will describe the known issues, and how you may resolve these issues.

They go on to state that these issues are likely caused by interoperability with desktop firewall applications or applications that manage network traffic. Bell Canada and Starbucks Coffee Canada have announced a new Wi-Fi service that will allow Starbucks customers to access e-mail or the Internet while in one of the company-operated coffeehouses across Canada. The service will feature high-speed connectivity, a uniform log-in process, and the ability to bill usage to regular monthly carrier statements or a credit card.
The new service will be initially introduced at coffeehouses in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The companies also plan to add wireless hotspots to more than 400 Canadian Starbucks locations within the next year.

Ineen is a VOIP program that is an alternative to programs like Skype, and they also offer a version for Pocket PC. It supports video conferencing, call recording, call transfer, as well as instant messaging. At the present time, Ineen only supports calls to other Ineen users, and does not support calls to regular phones. In order to use ineen for Pocket PC, your computer must meet the following minimum system requirements:

Windows Mobile 2002 or 2003 Pocket PC
400 Mhz processor
WiFi / WLAN enabled

F-Secure has announced that its antivirus software will now be available for devices that run the Windows Mobile operating system.

"Mobile Antivirus is delivered to subscribers wirelessly and provides real-time protection against viruses, worms and Trojan horses, which are starting to surface. It will cover Windows Mobile 2003/2003SE Pocket PCs Phone Media edition including devices such as the Qtek 9090, MDA III, Qtek 2020, Qtek S100, MDA Compact, and T-Mobile branded ones such as MDA II, MDA III, and MDA Compact, according to F-Secure representatives."

The software is available for download from F-Secure, and will cost $34.95 for a 12-month subscription.

Mobile Tech Review has had a fairly extensive look at Sprint's new Audiovox PPC-6700.

"The PPC-6700 is both a full-featured Pocket PC PDA running Windows Mobile 5.0 and a Sprint PCS cell phone. It replaces the much larger and somewhat crankier Audiovox PPC-6600 which featured a standard slider keyboard design. It has a 416 MHz processor, 128 megs of flash ROM, a mini-SD card slot, 1.3 megapixel camera and supports both 1xRTT and EVDO. This was the first Windows Mobile 5 phone to hit the US market and it's offered exclusively by Sprint PCS.

Aspecto Software has announced an minor version update for thier Wi-Fi tunes software. Wi-Fi tunes is a program that allows WiFi-enabled Pocket PC PDAs to browse iTunes libraries on their local computers and stream MP3s.

Fixes in the new version .4 are as follows;

- Now you can change the list font size
- Duplicates not shown in library menu
- Skips to next track without locking up
- Playlist items are now in the same order as in itunes
- Stop button graphics changed
