Opera and Sharp have announced that the new Opera Mobile 8.5 browser for Pocket PC will be bundled on the new Sharp W-ZERO3 Windows Mobile Pocket PC device.

"With its 3.7 inch VGA (640x480 pixels) high resolution LCD screen and WLAN connectivity, the Sharp W-ZERO3 is ideal for Web browsing on-the-go. Opera's unique rendering technology dynamically adapts Web pages to fit the width of the screen, providing an Internet experience almost identical to that on a larger PC screen."

Telus has announced the Canadian availability of their new UTStarcom Pocket PC 6700, the first Pocket PC in Canada with Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0. The PPC 6700 will operate on Telus' high-speed CDMA 1xEVDO network.

"Telus Mobility's wireless high-speed network offers typical download speeds of 400 to 700 kilobits per second. Based on the CDMA 1xEVDO standard, the newest Third Generation (3G) wireless data technology available, wireless high-speed is available in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal, and will roll out to more urban centers throughout 2006. The UTStarcom PPC6700 is also designed to be fully backward compatible with Telus Mobility's 1X network, which covers more than 90 per cent of the Canadian population, and offers mobile data service where wireless high-speed is not yet available."

LG Electronics has announced the upcoming release of their new PM80 Pocket PC. At first glance the specs appear to be pretty standard, with one major difference. The device includes a terrestrial DMB receiver allowing users to receive stable broadcasts as up to 100 km/hour. Other specifications of the device are as follows;

CPU : Intel Bulverde 312MHz
OS : PPC 2003 SE
LCD : 3.5 inch QVGA
Memory : RAM 64MB/ROM 64MB
Battery : 1,420mAh

Makayama Interactive has announced the latest release of thier DVD to Pocket PC software, which features major improvements to the processing speed of movie conversion.

Hp is now offering thier previously announced Windows Mobile 2005 upgrades for the iPAQ hx2100, hx2400 and hx2700 series Pocket PCs.

In addition to the English ROM upgrade for US customers, HP also made the Windows Mobile 5.0 ROM upgrade for French, German, Italian and Spanish customers available. While the English and French versions can be ordered from the US shop, the other local versions need to be ordered from the local HP site.

Cicero Networks Ltd has announced thier fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) technology which allows seamless roaming between cellular and wireless networks.

"For those who are eagerly awaiting for VoIP to come out for their cellphones, the wait is now over. On Thursday, Cicero Networks Ltd. announced the launch of a smartphone version of its CiceroPhone which offers converged VoIP features. Going a step further, Cicero also announced a new Call Continuity server, a major new enhancement to the Cicero Controller that paves the way for seamless roaming between both Wi-Fi/GSM and Wi-Fi/CDMA networks."

Isotope 244 Graphics have announced the release of thier new Atomic Battle Dragons game for the Pocket PC.

According to a report from Digitimes, Acer is expanding it's growth focus outside of the PC market, into areas such as LCD TV's and PDA's.

"According to company chairman JT Wang, Acer aims to sell 700,000 PDAs in 2005, up six-fold from 100,000 units last year. The sales will continue to climb 114% in 2006, when the company's ranking in the global PDA market is expected to rise from third to second, said Wang. Acer currently offers three PDA's - the n30, n35 and n50, all of them being manufactured by Lite-On Technology."

Asus has officially announced thier new A636 GPS enabled Pocket PC. It sports a 416 MHz Intel processor, features 128 MB Flash ROM, as well as 64 MB RAM. It is equipped with Bluetooth as well as 802.11b Wi-Fi. The device will support SDIO/SD/MMC through its expansion memory slot, and ship with the latest version of Windows Mobile 2005. For its GPS functionality it sports the SiRF StarIII GPS chip.

Another version of the device, the A632 is also available with the same specifications as the A636, with the exception that it does not include Wi-Fi. To learn more about the devices you can view a flash presentation available by clicking the link below.

The developers at Noctemware have ported Quake 3 Arena to Pocket PC as as a test for their SpeedDemon Windows CE profiler.

"We thought it would be fun to do it, so we ported the recenly-GPL-released Quake 3 Arena from iD Software to Windows CE 4.2 for Pocket PC, as a test for our 'SpeedDemon' Windows CE profiler. The game support the Intel 2700g chipset for hardware OpenGL-ES rendering, as well as software rendering."

It will run on PPC 2003 and later, including Windows Mobile 5. Remember that since the software is beta that it is unsupported, that users do so at thier own risk.

The FCC has granted approval to Acer for thier N310 and N311 Pocket PC's. This is significant in that it is the first indication that Acer is planning a North American release for these devices.

"The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given Acer permission to release in the U.S. two new Pocket PCs which will be part of the N300 series. Both of the N310 and N311 will offer 3.7-inch VGA screens and USB host capabilities. They will include Bluetooth 1.2, as well, but only the N311 will have WiFi."

According to a report from theunwired.net, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has confirmed that they will not be offering Windows Mobile 2005 upgrades as had been previously announced.

"Today the German PR Manager of Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Lothar Lechtenberg, confirmed that FSC has canceled the previously announced plans to offer a Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for the Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox 718 and 720 Pocket PC devices.
According to him, the reason for the cancellation are technical difficulties."

Bell Canada today unveiled Bell Mobility's new mobile data network, EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized), which it says is the "fastest mobile data network ever commercialized." The technology is the third generation (3G) of wireless networks, and delivers data at download rates of up to 2.4Mbps, which Bell says is more than five times faster than anything else in Canada.

"The future of wireless is here today: EV-DO will fuel the next phase of wireless growth and provide Canadians with highly advanced next generation services not previously available," said Robert Odendaal, President of Bell Mobility and BDI. "With Bell's new network, we are changing the way Canadians use their wireless devices for work or play. Customers can only get this from Bell."

The fast data transmission speeds of EV-DO allow for streaming video, high-speed surfing, and 1MB file downloads in 20 seconds or less, with an average speed that varies between 400kbps - 700kbps.

Spb Software House has announced thier Second Annual Spb Pocket PC Survey.
