The anxiously awaited (and long overdue), Opera for Windows Mobile devices has been officially released.

"Opera Software today released Opera Mobile 8.6 for Windows Mobile, finally offering Pocket PC owners a fast and user-friendly Web surfing experience on their devices. Opera Mobile 8.6 for Pocket PC takes full advantage of the larger screen and higher resolution of PPC devices by offering tabbed browsing and surfing in horizontal landscape mode. The browser is based on Opera's newest core code and runs on Windows Mobile 5 and 2003 SE. Opera Mobile for Pocket PC is available from www.opera.com/mobile and comes with a free 30-day trial."

Pavel Koza over at PDA Gold has posted his first impressions after spending some time with the new HTC Hermes.

"Imagine a device which has perhaps everything that a very compact device with a Windows Mobile operating system can have. High-speed processor. Decent memory. Nice display. Slide-out QWERTY keyboard with automatic lighting. Integrated 2MPix camera with the option to adjust the focus manually. Integrated IrDA, Bluetooth and WiFi module. But above all a GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS (HSDPA) module for high-speed data. Yes, the new HTC Hermes offers it all and then some."

If you happen to be looking to share your Wi-Fi internet connection, then you may want to check out FON, a web based global community of broadband user's looking to "trade" their bandwidth.

"FON is an integration of those wanting to contribute to free universal communication and solidarity. We are a usernet growing larger every time we exchange part of our bandwidth for the ability to connect to the bandwidth of other FON members, in every moment from every location in the world."

Well, about a week has passed since the announcement of the Motorola Q's availibility on the Verizon network in the US, but still no offical announcement on who will be the Canadian carrier for the much anticipated device.

According to a report in The Globe and Mail, Telus could be the first Canadian carrier to launch the Moto Q, and an official announcement may come as early as this week. The Moto Q has launched to rave reviews, and is expected to challenge the dominance of Research in Motion's line of Blackberry devices.

SlingMedia has announced an update to their SlingMobile software that will allow users of Windows Mobile powered Smartphones to view their Sling content on their Smartphone.

"Now Slingbox owners can watch and control their home TV from any network-enabled mobile phone or handheld computer (PDA) powered by Windows Mobile. The beta version of SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Smartphone software is available today as a free download from Sling Media's web site, www.slingmedia.com, as part of the public beta program. As had been previously rumored, Verizon and Motorola announced today the availability of the Moto-Q on the Verizon Wireless broadband EV-DO network.

"Motorola, Inc. and Verizon Wireless, the nations leading wireless service provider, today announced that the highly anticipated MotoQ will be available starting on May 31. SyncData has announced the release of SyncExpress 3, their application for synchronizing Windows Mobile based Pocket PC devices with Microsoft Outlook Express.

"SyncExpress 3 brings an important new feature: synchronized messages are copied in a separate account. The default "ActiveSync" or "Outlook E-mail" account is not used any longer by SyncExpress 3, making it possible to synchronize messages with Outlook on a second PC."

Microsoft has released the beta version of their new Windows Media Player 11. Of particular interest to users of portable devices are improved sync capabilities between the Media Player library and your portable device.

Skype has just announced that SkypeOut calls (calls from your computer or PDA to a regular landline or mobile phone) are now free for all of North America.

E-Ten is now set to launch it's new GPS Pocket PC in the the Taiwan market on May 17th.

"E-Ten Information Systems will launch the G500 GPS pocket PC phone in Taiwan on May 17, following the availability of the device in some overseas markets in the first quarter, according to company sources. The local launch of the G500 has been delayed twice, from an originally planned April 20 to the end of last month, and now to May 17."

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo says that it will has agreed to a deal that will have it incorporating Microsoft's Windows Media technologies into its 3G FOMA handsets, scheduled to launch later this summer.

"Microsoft's Windows Media platform and the company's commitment toward enabling new digital rights management solutions for the wireless environment are helping to push the industry forward," said Takeshi Natsuno, DoCoMo's senior VP and managing director of Multimedia Services. "With support for Windows Media, users of our FOMA handsets will enjoy a broader range of services and more choices for entertainment."

We came across a great freeware program from TranCreative Software called Remote Keyboard.

"Remote Keyboard is a program that connects PC keyboard and mouse to your Pocket PC over ActiveSync connection or TCP/IP network. It works as a Soft Input Panel (SIP), also called input method, along with Keyboard, Letter Recognizer or Transcriber in Pocket PC devices.

Speaking at this years Electronic Entertainment Expo, Bill Gates has announced that users of mobile devices can plan to see more gaming content coming their way over the next year.

"Spanning Windows Mobile, Java and BREW-based handsets, the world-class mobile games service will give gamers on-the-go access to cross-platform gaming communities at any time, from any location. By this time next year, users will be able to send messages, access friends lists, download the best of mobile game content, and sample, purchase and play favorites such as “Bejeweled,” “Zuma” and “Hexic” as part of the integrated gaming world."

This news will be of particular note to Windows Mobile users, as Windows Mobile is based on Windows CE, and expanding CE capabilities will eventually be reflected into future versions Windows Mobile.

"Microsoft will unveil a beefier version of Windows CE during a keynote at its annual Mobile & Embedded Developer's Conference (MEDC) in Las Vegas, May 9. Windows CE 6 offers a higher capacity for complex applications, fueling "more intelligent devices that offer advanced multimedia and Web services, and wireless networking," the company claims."

"Taiwan-based BenQ and High Tech Computer (HTC) are speeding up the respective launch of their HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) phones, with BenQ expected to deliver its first HSDPA phone, the EF91, to T-Mobile in July and HTC to begin shipping its model, codenamed Muse, to Qtek (Model S300) in the third quarter, according to market sources." McAfee, Inc., today announced that it will offer Cingular Wireless customers mobile security solutions for business-oriented devices. McAfee provides comprehensive mobile security solutions that are designed to protect against and prevent mobile threats and vulnerabilities.

"While mobile threats have presented themselves largely as proof of concept, we think it's important for carriers to get ahead of the curve, and offer proactive and preventative solutions before a significant attack occurs," commented McAfee senior VP Todd Gebhart. Aventail has announced an updated version of its Aventail Mobile solution for PDAs and smart phones. Aventail Mobile 2 extends Aventail's ease of use and end point control with key features such as mobile roaming, which enables users to move between wireless networks without losing the VPN connection, and device watermarking, which gives administrators the ability to both classify a managed device and disable access from the device if lost or stolen.

According to an unsubstantiated rumour currently posted over at Engadget.com, the Motorola-Q is set to be announced at a press conference on May 22nd. It appears that Verizon will be the US carrier, as the press conference is scheduled with executives from both Motorola and Verizon in attendance.
The Motorola Q is an ultra thin Blackberry type device, that will feature a qwerty keyboard, with a 320-by-240-pixel screen running in landscape mode by default. It will also feature bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel camera and will run Windows Mobile 5.0 for smartphone.
