Tougher competition and stock-option expenses hurt Palm Inc.'s fiscal first-quarter profits, yet investors seemed cheered by the company's strategy for future growth. Shares of Palm closed Thursday at $14.50, down $1.11, or 7 percent, on the Nasdaq Stock Market, but rose 68 cents, or 4.7 percent in extended trading following its quarterly report.

Palm plans to expand its global efforts to grow sales and last week introduced its new Treo 750v in Europe, a region in which the company has had minimal market share. Palm also plans to introduce a lower-priced Treo model for consumers later this year.

You may remember a while back that we reported on Boeings plans to ditch their Connexion In-flight Hi-Speed Internet service. Well it now appears that Panasonic may be willing to pick up the slack, offering a similar, lower cost service than the one that was previously being offered by Boeing.

"They're not looking at taking over the Boeing service, but claim they've figured out a way to use a similar approach so that they can easily switch existing Connexion-outfitted planes to their own service. Panasonic is using the death of Connexion smartly for their own marketing efforts, asking airlines that currently use the system to commit to switch over within 60 days, to avoid any downtime for fliers."

A company by the name of XG Technology is touting a new technology known as XMax, the first mobile Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) system. The system makes it easier for operators to set up mobile phone and data communications systems by using unlicensed sections of the radio spectrum.

"At the heart of the system is xG Flash Signal, which is a highly efficient transmission system that provides up to three times the coverage, compared with other wireless technologies. City-wide services can be set up for a fraction of the cost of a traditional mobile phone system and if XG has got its sums right, and it manages to get financial backing, subscribers can look forward to cheaper handsets, lower running costs, higher quality and better coverage."

I have never had much success with OCR programs for the desktop, however the technology does seem to make a lot of sense for mobile devices where text input is a bit more of a chore.

"OCR, of course, is optical character recognition, a technique used to turn words on paper into words in digital format, for manipulating on computers and such. Well, a company called ABBYY, out of Southern California, has come up with an application that lets you take a picture of a set of text with your mobile phone and convert that picture into digital text."

The article includes a video, although it is tough to see how accurately it performed the conversion. If you are interested in checking it out you can click the link below.

There is an interesting article just posted over at the 2 inch view website that covers the user experience of Windows Mobile and the Slingbox.

The software was initially offered as a free download for Slingbox owners, but is now being offered for $29.95 USD (which is rather pricey for a Smartphone application). I tested both the Pocket PC and Smartphone versions of the program, and both worked equally well."

Looking for a way to remove that Palm logo from your Windows Mobile Treo, then this article may be for you. It is a step by step how-to on removing the logo's from your PDA or Cell phone.

"This instructable is to show you how easy it is to remove some unwanted logo's from cell phones and other plastic / metal products. The logo has to be of the type glued onto the surface rather then etched in (which generally is the case 90% of the time) as we will scratch them off."

The results look pretty impressive, so if you are interested in giving it a try you can read the full article by clicking on the link below.

"Based on preliminary financial data, Palm expects revenue to be in the range of $354 million to $356 million for the first quarter of fiscal year 2007. This compares with earlier guidance of $380 million to $385 million provided June 29, when Palm reported its fourth quarter fiscal year 2006 results. The revenue shortfall was primarily due to lower Treo volumes in carrier retail channels."

Pretec has announced the launch of a new 8 GB SD card, the largest SD we have seen to date.

"Using the new SD 2.0 standard (also known as SDHC), the new card offers double the capacity of the original SD card format, which is limited to a maximum of 4GB by design. SD 2.0 is not backwards compatible with earlier hardware, though Pretec plans to introduce a tool named SD-Tuner to help users make the transition."

The card will apparently be available in the 4th quarter of this year, at an expected retail price of $299 USD. Seems reasonable given that it doesn't seem that long ago that a 1GB CompactFlash card was selling for more than a $1000.... (Source- Electronista)
