Netfront's Pocket PC add-on for Sony's LocationFree TV is now available.

"NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC is an application that supports TV or DVD programs on a Pocket PC device when connected to Sony Corporation's LocationFree base station via wireless LAN or router. NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC allows you to enjoy TV programs both at home and while you are away from home via the Internet."

It works along the lines of Slingbox, Orb etc, and if you have the LocationFree set-up from Sony it may be worth checking out.

According to a report in Digitimes, there was a significant decrease in the shipments of Handheld devices in the 3rd quarter of 2006.

"There were 118,506 hand-held devices shipped in the Taiwan market in the third quarter of 2006, decreasing by 21% from the preceding quarter, according to International Data Corporation (IDC) Taiwan."

The most popular operating system for PDA phones and smartphones was Symbian, followed by Microsoft Windows Mobile. (Source- Digitimes)

Sling Media has released an update to their SlingPlayer Mobile software. In addition to some minor bug fixes, the new version adds support for the T-Mobile "Dash" as well as the Samsung "Blackjack".

PhatWare Corp. announces the release of PhatPad 4.0, the next generation of the company's award-winning notes organizer for Microsoft Windows-based Tablet, Desktop and Windows Mobile powered Pocket PCs.

PhatPad allows users to draw pictures, jot notes or put a mixture of pictures and typed text on a virtual scratch pad. The program uses new digital ink technology, which provides a very smooth ink flow, so it feels like writing on an actual piece of paper. Bengalboy.com has posted pics and info on the new upcoming HTC Athena.

"Regarding the support for wireless standards, BengalBoy.com got the information, that the HTC Athena will be a triband GSM/GPRS/EDGE only device (without support for the North American GSM 850) with support of UMTS 2100 MHz. In addition, the HTC Athena is expected to include WiFi b/g as well as Bluetooth. Last but not least it's sporting a 2 megapixel camera with macro and flash as well as a significant ROM memory increase to 250mb which can be extended thought SD cards."

Skype has released a new version of their VOIP client for Windows Mobile, Skype 2.2 Beta. The big news with this release is that for the first time, Skype is now available for Windows Mobile Smartphones.

"New features in Skype 2.2 for Windows Mobile include an enhanced screen with presence status and notification of events such as missed calls and voicemails. The client also now supports secure connections including HTTPS, HTTPS/SSL, and SOCKS5 proxies."

Ecotronics Ventures LLC announces the beta launch of the mobile version of their leading VoIP client software, Kapanga Softphone.

The 30-day trial beta can be downloaded for free from Kapanga Softphone's website (http://www.kapanga.net). Once installed, Kapanga Mobile users can establish simultaneous voice and video communications through a software PBX or VoIP provider using the mobile device's 802.11 Wifi connection. Kapanga Mobile can also communicate directly to another SIP client device. Supported codecs include G.711, G.729 and AMR for voice and H.263, H.263+ and H.264 for video.

LG keeps capitalizing on the success of their "Chocolate" phone, and this time it's with the addition of a Windows Mobile flavor.

"LG is extending their chocolate phone series to Windows Mobile pocket pc phone with the introduction of KC1 for Korea. Presented in ITU communication show in Hong Kong, the KC1 support the Wimax connection, has a big 2.8" QVGA touch screen, 2 megapixel camera and microSD slot."

Dopod International and Research in Motion have announced the availability of "BlackBerry Connect", providing users of Dopod devices support for popular Blackberry services.

If you have been following the launch of the new Office 2007 from Microsoft, you know that there are some significant changes, including new file formats not compatible with previous versions of Office. While the current versions of Windows Mobile will not be compatible with Office 2007, Microsoft has confirmed an update to allow Windows Mobile 5 users full support of the new formats.

At this point it appears that any previous versions of Windows Mobile will not be supported. The update is expected to be available sometime in early 2007. (Source- Brighthand.)

ACCESS CO.,LTD announced today that it will introduce an English-language version of "NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC Rev. 2.0.0", the company's image viewing software for Windows Mobile for Pocket PC. The product will debut in the U.S. in mid-December 2006. An updated Japanese-language version with increased functionality will be launched in Japan simultaneously.

The NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC runs with Sony Corporation's LocationFree software and enables users to view TV programs and video content from various locations even outside the home via an Internet connection.

Samsung and Microsoft have officially announced the launch of what they are calling "the world's thinnest 3G smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard". Otherwise known as the Samsung Ultra Messaging i600.

"The device, powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0, uses the new mobile protocol called HSDPA, or high-speed downlink packet access, that provides faster downloads of video and streaming music. The download speed is designed to be as fast as those provided by ADSL, or asymmetric digital subscriber line, used in homes."
