Microsoft will (again) be renaming the various versions of Windows Mobile, in an effort to completely confuse anyone who wants to use one of their products.

"There will be (at least) three versions of Windows Mobile 6, all of which come with rather generic taglines. What was once known as Smartphone (for touchscreen-less handsets) will become "Standard", "Professional" takes over the duties of Pocket PC Phone Edition, and Pocket PC (i.e., the telephony-less wonders) will be transformed into "Classic". 'Cause, you know, PDAs without phone radio are getting a little dated."

Oh well, it could have been worse, and they could have used the same naming convention as Vista, and then we would all be really confused.

ZDnet has posted their initial impressions of the i-mate JAQ3, a device claiming to be the world's thinnest Pocket PC phone.

"i-mate has the same excellent feeling rubberized casing that is on the T-Mobile Dash so it gives you a bit better grip on the device. The JAQ3 is not too much thicker than the Dash, but is longer. It feels quite light and after looking under the back cover it seems like they could have slimmed it down even more. There is a camera button, for the 2 megapixel camera, an OK button, and a 360 degree scroll wheel on the left hand side."

Pavel at PDA Gold has put together another review worth checking out, and this time he takes a look at the HTC Herald.

"The HTC P4350 (Herald) does not bring any ground-breaking innovations yet virtually all of its features have been brought (close) to perfection. Despite the weak processor, it offers more than the Artemis, which has almost identical parameters. The display is brilliant, audio capabilities more than satisfactory. Bluetooth and WiFi work fine (better sensitivity would be welcome). The Herald excelled as a cell phone, and its camera ranks among the best in this category (Windows Mobile devices).

USA ePay, announces the release of its latest addition to the Wireless ePay family, Wireless ePay for Windows Mobile. The new version is designed for Pocket PC's, Smart Phones and other mobile devices with the Windows Mobile operating system.

This device allows USA ePay wireless merchants to switch between different mobile devices and still keep the W-ePay SC30 for processing; cutting out costs for new equipment. "A merchant can use a Blackberry phone one month and switch to a Java phone the next month and then switch again to a Windows Mobile phone and use the same W-ePay devices for the credit card processing"

The folks over at www.mobile-review.com have posted a video of the next version of the Windows Mobile operating system, codenamed "Crossbow"

While there have been many screen shots that have leaked out, we believe this to be the first video we have seen with the new operating system. That's the good news, the bad news is most of the video is spent trying different ring tones on the device.

Nonetheless, there are some quick glimpses on new menu's etc, so hardcore enthusiasts may find that it is worth checking out. You can do so by clicking the link below.

Avis will soon be giving customers the option to have Wi-Fi service in their rental cars.

"Autonet Mobile, a start-up wireless technology company based in San Francisco, is expected to announce soon that it has reached an agreement with Avis Rent A Car System to provide an optional wireless access point - better known as a Wi-Fi hot spot - to Avis customers by March. For $10.95 a day, Avis will issue motorists a notebook-size portable device that plugs into a car's power supply and delivers a high-speed Internet connection to passengers"

While this will be a cool option for rentals, I can't help but wonder where to buy a unit for my vehicle? The thought of having Wi-Fi access anywhere I go by strategically parking my vehicle sounds to good to be true!

According to NPD Group, the market for Smartphone type devices entered a growth spurt in 2006.

"The long-awaited growth in smartphone sales comes at a crucial time for carriers who have been anticipating wider adoption of smartphones," said Neil Strother of NPD. "For the past couple of years, carriers and their handset suppliers have been hoping more buyers would migrate to these devices, since smartphone owners tend to spend much more on wireless data than those who don't own them."
